Before playing The Witcher II: Thronebreaker, players should first go back and play the prequel game The Witcher Tales: Thronebreaker. Because it is a sequel to the original game, you don't need to focus too much on the background of The Witcher's story and world when playing the game. However, understanding a little bit of the story and world helps players understand the game's message better. As the monarch of both Lyria and Rivia, you are Queen Meve. Queen Meve's hometown, Geralt, is located in Lyria. Nilfgaardian soldiers brutalize her country and threaten its safety. Because of this dire circumstance, Queen Meve must confront the threat head-on. She must mobilize troops to battle and defend her people from harm.

The Witcher Tales: Thronebreaker combines role-playing and light card game mechanics into one smooth and deep experience. With few exceptions, no other card games combine these elements so well. The Queen must confront and fight many enemies— from bandits, hostile soldiers, aggressive generals and even ghosts — on a rotating schedule. The game’s creators designed the schedule in a linear method, so the Queen doesn’t choose her destinations at random. The gameplay is similar to role-playing games and has elements of exploration, puzzle-solving, and map navigation like many other RPG games. It also has a combat system that relies on card tactics combined with great talent. The game is incredibly exciting to play; I don’t believe there’s any form of boredom.

All three are available in the game at all times and can be found throughout the map. Finding hidden treasures is also a way to acquire resources. Killing many enemies or collecting resources from their fallen bodies will grant you Wood. Gold is located in banks and can be secured through Gold Mines or Gold Banks. These are then used to upgrade facilities, create defensive structures, create offensive weapons and more. They can be used to swap out existing minions or create new ones. They can also be used to swap out important equipment with merchants. However, excessive use or uneven distribution of these stones can cause a fuel shortage, shortages of necessary resources and even unsafe Minion safety for all soldiers.
